Octobers athlete of the month is…… Jade B! Jade comes to practice every week full of energy and ready to learn. She shows promising signs of becoming a great athlete and leader! She always comes in with a positive attitude and a drive to learn. Her favorite event in gymnastics is floor. Although she can do beautiful handstands, backward rolls and cartwheels, her favorite skill to do is a split! She stated in a recent interview she loves gymnastics because it’s fun. Jade is a prime example of what we strive for at 316. Congratulations Jade!! We can’t wait to see your flourish and grow in our gym.

The first recipient of this award is the one and only, Ben Vardaman! Ben has been doing gymnastics since the age of 2. He currently attends Andover Academy and plans to serve in the United States Navy after graduation with a passion to pursue a career in the Naval Special Warfare! His favorite event is the High Bar as he placed 3rd in the event at Regionals. He also placed 6th on high bar at Westerns and 6th on floor at Regionals! Ben would like to thank his mom Michelle, his sister, nana and his coaches Kyle, Jeremy, Tristian and Londyn for his accomplishments!

Kaseton started gymnastics at just age 3 after his mother put him in a class. Even after trying other sports, Kaseton kept his heart on gymnastics! While his favorite event changes a lot frequently, his favorite skill is the double arabian on floor! If your not aware of this amazing skill, this requires the gymnast to start off with a roundoff then twisting in mid air to front facing flipping twice before landing! This is an extremely difficult skill to achieve and Kaseton has mastered it!

Unfortunately, Kaseton ended up needing shoulder surgery that left him out for 6 months. Despite the surgery and agony of being out, Kaseton was able to push through this difficult obstacle because of his love for gymnastics. He told us in a recent interview that he honestly doesn’t know who he would be without it! After graduation, he plans to go to Wichita State University for Forensic Science while competing for Kansas City United and coaching at 316. He loves helping other young gymnasts achieve their dreams! Kaseton would like to thank his mom and all of his coaches for making his career as a gymnast possible and encouraging him the whole time! Congratulations Kaseton, we’re so proud to have you at 316!

When Emma was 3 years old, her mom noticed her jumping around and trying to do flips on her bed. That was when Kendra knew, she needed to be in a gymnastics class! After her first class, she immediately fell in love and knew it’s what she wanted to do. Her favorite event is floor. Something about being able to flip around and do incredible things that has drawn her in! Even though floor might be her favorite event, doing a Giant on bars is her favorite skill! Emma uses her strength to swing her whole body, to be in sync with the motion of hovering over the bar in perfect balance. Would you dare to defy gravity??

Unfortunately being super woman in the gym can come with a few pain points. Emma’s turned out to be injuries. She has had 2 major shoulder surgeries in her career. What kept her going throughout all the pain? Emma will be the first to tell you that it was her faith. Emma is very active in the church and youth group. She really leaned on God to walk by faith and not by sight. She also really wanted to be a good role model for the little kids. There will be many obstacles in life not just gymnastics. Emma wanted to show them how important it is to work through those obstacles to continue to do the things you enjoy! After graduation she will be attending Saint Leo in Tampa Florida on a full Acro and Tumbling scholarship! We asked her in a recent interview if she would like to thank anybody who has helped her be where she is and this was her response.. “I would like to thank my mom who’s been there through everything. She always found ways for me to continue to work out and took me to a lot of appointments. She pushed me when I needed to be pushed and loved me when I needed to be loved! Of course all of my coaches. I’ve learned a lot from all of them. They have also loved me in some really happy times and held me up through the hard times.” We will miss Emma while she’s away but we’re so proud of how far she has come and how far she WILL go!

Olivia started gymnastics at just age 3. She loved the physical aspect of gymnastics and being able to do hard flips. It was having the ability to flip around and push herself that made her fall in love! Once she discovered her love for gymnastics, she had ONE goal in mind.. to be the best athlete SHE could be! Every day she pushed herself and fought for self improvement. Her favorite apparatus is beam. You know, the one where they flip and balance on 4 inches of wood? Beam has been known to be one of the harder events in gymnastics, but Olivia flourished in it! She told us in her Senior Interview that her favorite skill is her front aerial. A skill that requires the gymnast to leap forward flipping in mid air and landing it safely without the use of their hands! Every athlete must overcome an obstacle on their way up to success no matter what sport your in and it wasn’t the physical aspect of gymnastics for her. Olivia’s biggest struggle was the mental aspect. But no matter how hard it was, she showed up for herself every day and never let herself forget the reason why she loves gymnastics! After graduation, Olivia plans on attending Butler College and majoring in exercise science so SHE can help the next person in line become the best version of themselves no matter what that looks like! She would like to thank both of her parents, Janita and Paul, along with her coaches before 316 – Shane, Dakota and Lauren, as well as her 316 coaches Tristian, Paige and Londyn!
